There are many languages speak in China. Generally speaking, standard Chinese can be understood and spoken for most Chinese. Standard Chinese also called as Putonghua,Mandarin Chinese. However, when you live in China, you will find different people speak different language in live. Those are dialects. In fact, besides Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese, there are many more than those two languages and dialects in China...

 

Chinese is only one of a very few contemporary languages whose history is documented in an unbroken tradition extending back to the second millennium BC. At the same time, in its numerous dialectal forms, it has more speakers than any language spoken in the modern world (Norman,1). Other than dialects in China, there are also many other minority languages.

 

For example, if you visit Guangdong, when you go to Guangzhou, you will find local people speak Cantonese. Cantonese also spoken widely around Guangzhou, such as Foshan, Jiangmen, Zhaoqing, ZhuHai. But these cities' languages maybe a little diferent. However, if you go to Chaozhou, Shantou, you will find local people speaking a different language - that is chaoshanhua. When you go to the north of Guangdong - Shaoguan, another language you will hear - some people speak Kejiahua. If you visit the west of Guangdong, such as Maoming, many people will speak Maominghua...
